Parent Workshop Phonics February 2020 Britannica International Essential letters and sounds (els) is our chosen phonics programme. it was validated by the department for education in the june 2021. validation means that the dfe have assured that els met the criteria for an effective systematic synthetic phonics (ssp) programme. There is a year 1 phonics screening test in june, which helps your child’s teacher to identify if your child is secure in sounding out and blending graphemes. the test is made of 40 words; 20 real words and 20 ‘alien words’ (nonsense words). it detects if they can read phonically decodable words. I have uploaded my year 1 parent workshop powerpoint that i used for phonics screening. it details when, how and what parents can do to support their child at home before the check. This workshop was designed to provide parents with information about how to develop fluency and comprehension skills in key stage two. you will find the powerpoint slides below. The check is not timed but will typically take between 5 and 10 minutes to complete. rest breaks may be given if needed but the check must be completed on the same day. a familiar adult will administer the check on a 1 1 basis, in a quiet, comfortable, well lit space away from distraction.
