Work The Gilbert George Centre Releasing rare and hard to find gilbert & george posters, beginning with the 2007 tate modern retrospective. Rendered in gilbert & george’s signature grid format, the work confronts the viewer with a collision of existential opposites. fragmented bodies, bold typography, and acidic hues form a visual structure oscillating between eulogy and celebration.
The Art The Gilbert George Centre Taking its title from the significant four part piece death hope life fear… (1984), the exhibition presents the subjects surveyed by gilbert & george as they seek to express the fundamentals of human existence, conveying what they see as the universal truths of the modern condition. To mark the inauguration of the centre, the first exhibition will be the paradisical pictures, shown in london for the first time. in these works the artists inhabit a disquieting vision of a heavenly place imagined as an enchanted forest or overgrown park. Gilbert prousch and george passmore are not radicals, they are naughty conservatives — naughty enough that their best known works include the naked shit pictures, dirty words pictures, “sex. A main entrance to the centre is not immediately obvious. but as you enter, the wall you pass along to the left steps back with a cantilevered roof canopy oversailing a set of glazed doors. these lead into a space where introductory films to the centre and gilbert & george’s work can be viewed. Gilbert: london is the place for artists, and especially east london. we have lived and worked in here since 1968 and at the time there was huge excitement in the area. Displayed together for the first time, and presented as a memorial to george crompton, the triptych picture ‘crompton street’ and the picture ‘number twelve’ are unique within the art of gilbert & george, featuring a friend who they knew for more than 30 years.
