Wonkyworld Bicentennial Quilt The Returnee Quilts commemorating the bicentennial reflect both patriotic fervor and constructive criticism of the government. as individuals and as groups, women chose quiltmaking for its symbolism as a women’s art form. Recently i bought an interesting bicentennial quilt. i'd never really thought of collecting bicentennial quilts, since many of the really great ones will never be sold, but this one caught my eye for a couple reasons. first, i liked the design; second, the price was very low. Each of the white blocks has an american eagle quilted in blue thread giving the quilt something of a patriotic red, white and blue appearance. the quilt measures 66" x 76". Here they are, in my collection. i feel they are important, not just because i grew up in the 1970s and was 10 years old the year of the bicentennial. they represent a milestone in american history and a turning point for quiltmaking in america.
