Why Japans Giant Salamanders Are Disappearing
Japanese Giant Salamanders 002 Big Fish Expeditions This study aims to assess the current habitat suitability and distribution of the japanese giant salamander ( andrias japonicus ) and to predict changes under future climate scenarios. Future climate predictions indicate a major decrease of suitable areas. altogether, our results highlight the habitat preferences of giant salamanders at a broad scale and the negative impact of climate change on future suitable areas.

Japanese giant salamanders can be found in the rivers flowing from the lower slopes of the mountain. due to snowmelt and high levels of rainfall flowing down the mountain, the temperature of its rivers remain below 25°c even during summer. 2. material and methods 2.1. study area and occurrence of japanese giant salamanders to explore and quantify the fragmentation of japanese giant salamander habitat by dams, we selected eight watersheds within the species’ distribution in japan (duret et al., 2025). The japanese giant salamanders is vulnerable to extinction: a handful of conservationists is fighting to save this amphibian from river concrete.

The japanese giant salamanders is vulnerable to extinction: a handful of conservationists is fighting to save this amphibian from river concrete. The sustainable daisen non profit organisation (npo) recently brought local people, university students and volunteers from the us military together to take direct conservation action to help the japanese giant salamander (jgs, andrias japonicus) in a unique and important habitat. Asia's giant salamanders are the largest amphibians on earth. i went to japan to see them up close, learn why they're disappearing, and meet the people worki. One of the main impediments to the amphibians’ survival are concrete structures in rivers such as dams, weirs and embankments. the animals struggle to climb over or swim around these barriers and, as a result, they are prevented from migrating upstream to reach breeding sites. In conclusion, the japanese giant salamander is a once abundant species that is now struggling to survive in its native habitat. the combination of habitat loss, pollution, illegal collection, and overfishing has placed this remarkable creature at risk of extinction.
