This document was prepared in collaboration by postvention australia and the australian institute for suicide research and prevention (aisrap) with contributions from australian experts in postvention.
Suicide Postvention Toolkit Postvention Australia Postvention is an essential component of support and is fundamentally based on a relationship between people and their community. it is imperative that postvention takes account of the broad continuum of people who have a relationship or identify with someone who dies by suicide (1). The process of an intervention post suicide was acknowledged by edwin schneidman, as “postvention is the prevention for the next generation” (cain, 1972, pg. x). postvention is a process which alleviates the effects of stress and aids in coping with a death by suicide. Postvention refers to activities or interventions occurring after a death by suicide, to support those bereaved or affected (family, friends, professionals, peers, responders, community) to cope with stressors and manage the experience of loss and grief. Postvention refers to activities implemented by a learning community after a suicide has occurred with the aim to: minimise the impact of exposure and reduce the effects of suicide contagion. avoid glamorising, sensationalising, and stigmatising suicide.
