One of 23 members of the first cohort for heterodox academy’s campus community network, wmu joins johns hopkins university, mcgill university, mit and the university of california berkeley. The heterodox academy, a nonpartisan nonprofit, supports educators and institutions in creating environments where open inquiry and constructive disagreement can thrive. wmu’s recognition underscores its role as a national leader in advancing these values in higher education.

In the summer of 2024, wmu’s hxa campus community raised concerns about institutional statements with university leadership and its impact on campus culture. soon after, the president’s cabinet began studying the issue. Heterodox academy was founded in 2015 by jonathan haidt, chris martin, and nicholas rosenkranz, in reaction to their observations about how the absence of viewpoint diversity was reducing the quality, reliability, and integrity of research and scholarship. With a goal to change campus culture and expand viewpoint diversity, western joined 22 other colleges and universities across the united states and canada in heterodox academy’s campus community network.
