Ifrc Disaster Law Database Ifrc This chapter explores the evolution and principles of disaster law, focusing on its role in managing natural and human induced disasters. key components include legal provisions for disaster risk reduction, preparedness, emergency response, and recovery efforts. Disasters cause enormous human suffering and loss, but the right laws and policies can help keep communities safe and reduce disaster impact. disaster law seeks to reduce human vulnerability by promoting legal preparedness for disasters and playing a critical role in reducing disaster risk. What is international disaster law? international disaster law (idl) focuses on the legal issues arising from the preparation for, response to and recovery from different natural hazards, such as earthquakes or storms, as well as human made disasters such as large scale industrial accidents. Research will inform peer to peer learning on disaster law in asean. in addition an online platform will be created to provide a “one stop shop” for disaster law and policy information across asean.

Technical input and editorial oversight were provided by lucia cipullo, tessa kelly, sheu jeen lee and david fisher of the ifrc’s disaster law programme, and jeong park from the australian department of foreign affairs and trade. As we face increasingly frequent and intense disasters, the need for effective disaster laws is increasing. the importance of domestic disaster laws, policies and plans is recognised by priority 2 of the sendai framework, which is to strengthen disaster risk governance. In response to the 2004 aceh tsunami, the indonesian government issued presidential regulation no. 83 2005 establishing the national coordinating agency for disaster management. following that, indonesia has focused on disaster risk reduction. Disasters can cause enormous human suffering and loss. but the right laws and policies help keep communities safe, save lives, and ensure assistance reaches people when they need it most.
