A mathematical model for the evacuation of people from a road tunnel is created, taking into account various factors such as the speed at which people move, the density of the flow of people, and the outcome of the fire. It is therefore useful for predicting an evacuation situation in which a fire breaks out in a tunnel by performing a numerical simulation and examining the evacuation safety of the tunnel. in this study, a tunnel fire was reproduced using the fire dynamics simulator (fds) fire simulation software. In the present thesis, a wide comparison between modelling approaches has been provided for the study of road tunnel evacuations.

In the present thesis, a wide comparison between modelling approaches has been provided for the study of road tunnel evacuations. Three railway tunnels were studied, with different characteristics in length, cross section and slope. for them, cfd and evacuation simulations were carried out with pyrosim and pathfinder, being coupled between them in order to obtain more accurate results in terms of evacuation time and poisoning. We successfully ran the full ppem course in distance learning mode for the first time in april 2020, including the all important ‘hands on’ experience of using advanced simulation software, remotely, under the expert guidance from our team. For given fire scenario and traffic situation in the tunnel, behaviour of individual evacuees as well as groups of evacuees is analyzed in order to demonstrate the impact of fire on people evacuation. Detailed evacuation strategies and the exposed issues were analyzed in those tunnel fire accidents emphatically, while evacuation findings of human behavior such as evacuation choices and trajectories were presented according to several field tunnel fire evacuations conducted by the authors.
