On Walt Whitman S Big Birthday 10 Glorious Relics The New York Times The national archives today announced the identification of nearly 3,000 walt whitman documents written during his service as a federal government employee. The walt whitman archive and the prospects for social editing (author’s original pre publication version). the version of record is available from dsh: digital scholarship in the humanities. This section of the archive offers users transcriptions and page images of approximately 3,000 documents (all of them letters) whitman produced while working as a clerk in the attorney general’s office, 1865–1873. an additional 400 documents will be made available as time allows. For these documents—identified by ken price during a series of trips to the national archives ii building, college park, maryland, 2008–2010—we provide both transcriptions and facsimile images of the original documents. Aided by such standard references as walt whitman: a descriptive bibliography by joel myerson, american literary manuscripts, and archival resources, the whitman archive team has identified an estimated 70,000 manuscript items produced by or relating to walt whitman. In addition to the annotations available for many of the letters, several introductions to correspondence of whitman family members provide extensive context for reading the letters to and from walt whitman. these introductions can be found under "further resources" on this page.
