Violence Prevention Toolkit Performing Arts The arts are a powerful tool for expression, healing, and social change. vpi’s arts based approach harnesses creative practices—such as visual art, theater, storytelling, and music—to explore experiences of violence, foster dialogue, and engage communities in prevention efforts. The west side story project toolkit is designed to help build new partnerships that employ theater and the arts to address some of today’s pressing issues such as youth violence, bullying, gangs, interracial tensions, and cultural conflict. Using an arts based and public health evaluation framework facilitated our knowledge about how this production, as a model, served as an entry point for longer term arts based violence prevention efforts within school settings. Its objective is to provide guidance, approaches, recommendations and tools to identify, make visible, prevent and eradicate practices and relationships that reproduce gender violence in the form of sexual harassment in the artistic sectors of the performing arts, visual arts and music.
