Who We Are Upper Willamette Stewardship Network If you just want to catch a sturgeon and perhaps snap a quick pic of it in the water before you release it, opportunity is abundant. the white sturgeon is widespread in oregon, ranging from the ocean to the willamette river and up the columbia and snake river. I have made 3 trips to the upper willamette (2 to hebb park and 1 out of willamette park) with only a few small catfish to show for it so far. the water i have been fishing looks amazingly perfect based upon my lower river success. I recently made a video of two sturgeon trips on the willamette river and i forgot to post it on here. if anyone has any advice on the video making editing, please let me know!. In 1989, for the first time since 1951, the odfw resumed stocking juvenile sturgeon in the upper willamette river. additional releases have been made every year. but you don't grow monsters overnight. only now are some of the younger sturgeon approaching legal size. I sturgeon fish out of buena vista. there's several good holes there. only caught shakers so far, but there are a few oversize in there. watched a guy once fighting one, saw it jump several times (it was huge), and it darn near spooled him. Owing to the impassable waterfalls at oregon city, the upper willamette does not naturally share in the exciting sturgeon fishery on the columbia river. after europeans arrived in oregon, a few white sturgeon moved into the upper willamette through the shipping locks built at willamette falls.
