Upper Willamette River The river supports millions of people as a critical water resource for cities, agriculture, and recreationists. since 2012, the metropolitan wastewater management commission (mwmc) and the freshwater trust (tft) have partnered to restore streamside forests along this river and its tributaries. The freshwater in oregon’s upper willamette river basin, tft works to restore streamside habitat that will improve water quality, increase fire resilience, and support native fish.
Upper Willamette River Basin The Freshwater Trust Congratulations to the mckenzie watershed council and the upper willamette stewardship network for securing $8.5 million in federal funding for restoration in the upper willamette basin. Here in the heart of the upper willamette, mckenzie river trust and our partners are working across the landscape to protect and care for special lands and waters and the species who depend upon them for survival. our rivers are the life force of our region. In 2022, the usgs selected the willamette river basin (wrb) as the fourth of several planned integrated water science (iws) basins. the willamette river basin was chosen because it represents many of the challenges faced by conflicting water demands between humans and ecosystems in the pacific northwest. Working with regional partners, the freshwater trust (tft) started its third water quality trading program in the upper willamette basin. tft conducted analyses to determine the most effective nature based actions to lower water temperatures, including planting trees and other vegetation.

Our basins of focus more isn’t necessarily better. for us, better is better. in each of our basins, we’re putting that ethos to work by delivering high impact work that demonstrates a better, results oriented model for conservation. Within the upper willamette river basin, the freshwater trust (tft) has partnered with local municipalities to develop conservation programs that strategically plant trees and vegetation beside rivers to lower water temperatures, decrease agricultural runoff, and safeguard riverbanks from erosion.
