Upper Willamette River
Upper Willamette River Part of the willamette floodplain was established as a national natural landmark in 1987, and the river was named as one of 14 american heritage rivers in 1998. the upper tributaries of the willamette originate in the mountains south and southeast of eugene, oregon. The upper willamette river basin is a vital network of forests, woodlands, wetlands and floodplains. the river supports millions of people as a critical water resource for cities, agriculture, and recreationists.

The upper willamette watershed includes tributaries of the middle fork willamette, coast fork willamette, mckenzie, and long tom rivers. here, these systems come together from the upland hills and forests. The viability of willamette river chinook and steelhead has declined since the last 5 year review and both species remain at moderate risk of extinction. none of the steelhead populations are close to meeting their recovery goals, the 5 year review concluded. It is formed by the confluence of the coast and middle forks southeast of eugene. it flows northward for 183 miles (295 km) past corvallis, albany, salem, and oregon city into the columbia river near portland. it is navigable downstream to eugene.

The willamette river is the largest tributary of the columbia in oregon and the largest river wholly within the state (the snake, which forms a portion of oregon’s border with idaho, is a bigger river but is not wholly within oregon). It focuses on the 58 mile section of river from the mckenzie river confluence near eugene to albany. the upper mainstem willamette river and its adjoining terrestrial corridor, including the floodplain, are significantly modified today from the time of euro american settlement in oregon in the 1840s.
