Undergraduate Programs Romance Languages Humanities Our students explore the languages, literature, and cultures of the romance world, both modern and historical. they work on understanding, speaking, reading, and writing the modern language. In the department of romance languages and literatures (rll), undergraduates discover the literatures, cultures, and critical approaches of societies worldwide whose approximately 920 million people speak french, italian, portuguese, spanish, and catalan.
Undergraduate Programs Romance Languages Humanities These major and minor programs give students knowledge of the literature in their area of concentration and develop the ability to read, write, and speak one or more of the romance languages. We provide classes in romance languages that help students develop linguistic abilities with an emphasis on real world proficiency, as well as introduce students to the major historical and cultural phenomena that characterize the romance speaking world. The nine course major in romance languages in the college of arts and science is administered by the departments of italian, french, and spanish and portuguese. students choose a combination of any two of these four languages, taking five courses in one and four in the other. Literature track: b.a. degree or equivalent with studies in one of the modern romance languages approximately corresponding to the equivalent undergraduate major at the university of california, berkeley. Students are advised to complement their study of romance languages and cultures with related courses in the fields of humanities and social sciences. these courses should broaden the cultural and linguistic expertise of the student. Students have the flexibility to explore their own interests while developing in depth knowledge of the language, literature, society, and culture of the francophone world. the department offers a wide range of courses in language, literature, theater, visual arts, cinema, and music.
