Tuatara Life Cycle Display Poster Life Cyclenew Zealandnew Zealand Native Tuatara are the only living representatives of an ancient lineage – the order sphenodontia, over 250 million years old. the other reptiles – crocodiles, turtles, snakes and lizards – have many species worldwide, but just two species of tuatara survive, and only in new zealand. Tuatara is known as a “living fossil” because it has been around for so long (see timeline). new zealand is the only country in the world where tuatara survive in the wild. Tuatara once lived throughout mainland new zealand, but naturally wild populations are now only found on islands off the northern east coast of the north island and some islands in the marlborough sounds. Tuatara’s continuing survival depends on the preservation of such islands, and on their homes being protected from mammal intrusion. there are also captive breeding programmes run by scientists that are aimed at reintroducing tuatara populations to suitable islands.

Tuatara are rare, medium sized reptiles found only in new zealand. they are the last survivors of the rhynchocephalia, an order of reptiles that thrived even before the age of the dinosaurs. the oldest fossils of tuatara are found in rocks of jurassic age – from 180 million years ago. Aotearoa is home to over 120 species of endemic lizards, yet we don’t hear about them nearly as much as our 170 species of endemic birds. our endemic lizard species are divided into geckos and skinks (tuatara aren’t lizards).
