Trl Gateway Project
Trl Gateway Project About the project the gateway project is now complete. the project saw a fleet of driverless pods providing a shuttle service around the greenwich peninsula to understand public acceptance of, and attitudes towards, driverless vehicles. The gateway project seeks to establish greenwich as a leading venue for the testing and development of automated transport systems, showcasing their effectiveness for implementation in london, the uk and beyond and enhancing the global competitiveness of uk businesses.
Trl Gateway Project As part of the gateway project we are seeking volunteers to take part in a survey designed to collect information from the general public concerning their perception of autonomous vehicles, which are ‘driverless cars’ controlled automatically by onboard computer. As part of the gateway project, trl conducted driving simulator trials with the general public to investigate drivers’ behaviour when encountering driverless cars on urban roads, and the effect it could have on traffic flow in urban environments. The most notable project was gateway, the first public trials of autonomous vehicles. the success of these projects led to trl and dg cities entering into a strategic partnership to develop the smart mobility living lab, the world’s most advanced real world urban test bed. Announced yesterday (7 august), the trial will see the project switch focus from exploring public perception and understanding of driverless vehicles, to allowing the public to interact with the technology.

The research programme, focused on the south east london borough and led by transport innovation firm trl, is running the trial of the cargopod vehicle in a partnership with the digital greenwich initiative. Gateway was an £8 million research and development project partly funded by government (innovate uk) and industry. the project sought to develop multiple use cases for autonomy and facilitate opportunities for members of the public to engage with this technology. “it has been a privilege for trl to lead such a landmark project as gateway. working with our partners, gateway has created an invaluable wealth of knowledge, experience and evidence based research on how to develop and test new technology and business models. The gateway (greenwich automated transport environment) project aims to understand and identify ways to overcome the technical, legal and societal barriers of implementing automated vehicles in an urban environment.
