I’ve been using sony cameras for the last five years or so. i love my sony nex fs700, so it was pretty easy making the transition to using the fs5. for the opening hyper lapse sequence i used my a6300 on a tripod. i picked that dynamic shot to quickly engage the viewer, and establish the location and name of the studio. The camera feels solid, it has a nice rotating grip that can be removed from the body and extended. the overall idea behind the camera is excellent, but there are a few things that don’t work as well as i would have liked. We agree that the camera has a new look. we found it pleasing, though we also liked the color from the original fs5. the thing to be aware of is that, because of the new color science, footage from the original fs5 and the new mark ii won’t match out of the box.

While sony’s e mount system provides a world of lens choices, sony’s 18 105mm servo zoom (sel p18105g) does what still image lenses do not. the precision servo provides smoother zoom than you could accomplish by hand. With both the fs5 and the c100mkii, the beauty is you can arrive on location and pull your camera out of the bag and begin shooting without building anything. but i give the fs5 the edge here, because even with my smallhd 502 monitor attached and rotated horizontal, it measures just 10” high.
