Rotunda Planetarium Public Nights The Rotunda Make plans to view the constellations and stars in the rotunda dome room on friday, november 28, from 6–8:30 p.m. this free community event will feature special performances by the youth orchestras of central virginia and a visit from historical actor interpreter bill barker as thomas jefferson. Join us for a free public viewing of the rotunda’s projected planetarium, where the dome room ceiling transforms into the night sky exactly as it appeared in 1827.

Rotunda Planetarium 20 years of grantmaking🔸🔹in 2019, the rotunda planetarium launched with a grant to bring thomas jefferson’s vision for a painted night sky to life on the rotunda dome room ceiling. Projectors beam a star chart onto the ceiling of the rotunda’s dome room, honoring university of virginia founder thomas jefferson’s vision for using the room as a planetarium. Since then, thousands of visitors have viewed the constellations at public nights and other events in the rotunda. thirteen projects received $800,579 in funding in 2019. While planning the early stages of the university of virginia, thomas jefferson envisioned a fantastical planetarium for the school's historic rotunda. in 2019, that vision has been achieved as the rotunda planetarium, thanks to three ph.d students from the school's english department, and a grant.
