What is the consumer code? the consumer code came into effect on 1 st april 2010 and applies to all homebuilders registered with the uk’s main new home warranty bodies nhbc, premier guarantee, labc warranty and checkmate. Wherever any of the following words or expressions are used in the code and guidance (including in the introduction, purpose of the code, scope of the code, and introduction to the independent dispute resolution scheme), it has the meaning given below unless the context requires otherwise. The consumer code applies to home buyers who reserve to buy a new or newly converted home built by a home builder under the insurance protection of one of our supporting home warranty bodies*. Our code addresses this in two ways. individual builders do not join our code or pay a membership fee. their ‘membership’ is covered by the home warranty body they are registered with and make it a requirement to comply with the code through the home warranty provider’s rules of registration. As a purchaser of a new home, you are protected by the consumer code. what is the consumer code? the consumer code is in place to ensure that the buyer of a new build home is protected through each stage of their home buying journey, from pre contract to home ownership.
