Chatsworth house trust, the charity maintaining the house, garden, parkland and collections at the estate, has been awarded £4.6m from the national lottery heritage fund (nlhf) for the restoration.

Built in the late 1600s, the cascade is a rare example of early engineering and nature inspired design. it has delighted generations of visitors but is now in urgent need of repair due to water damage and structural decline. A £5m bid has been lodged to plug a funding gap to restore a famous water feature at chatsworth house. the trust that runs the stately home and gardens in derbyshire is facing a £7m bill to restore. In addition to essential repairs to preserve the structure, a key element of the project is a public outreach programme designed to make the cascade, and the whole chatsworth garden, more accessible and exciting for visitors and learners of all ages and with a wide range of needs.

To assess the full extent of the damage beneath the cascade, we have conducted exploratory work and archaeological and archival research. we will be undertaking laser scans and hydraulic and ecological surveys to understand its state of disrepair. Chatsworth house trust has announced the launch of a major fundraising campaign to restore the much loved cascade. the cascade’s restoration is the latest initiative from the charity to celebrate chatsworth’s significant heritage, and to protect and preserve it for future generations to enjoy. We know that many of our communities visit for the cascade, and miss being able to sit and listen to the tranquil sound of water flowing down the 23 steps. chatsworth house trust launched a major restoration project to preserve and safeguard the cascade for future generations. The cascade has been a highlight of the chatsworth garden for more than three centuries. the original design was completed in 1696 by monsieur grillet, a french hydraulics engineer who had worked on the waterworks of louis xiv of france.
