Working on unit 371 proved to be a challenging experience for czerwiec and her colleagues. one coping skill czerwiec found helpful was telling stories via comics. this eventually led to full fledged graphic memoir of her time at illinois masonic, taking turns—stories from hiv aids care unit 371. Mk czerwiec, rn, ma is a nurse who uses comics to contemplate the complexities of illness and caregiving. she is the artist in residence at northwestern feinberg school of medicine and a senior fellow of the george washington school of nursing center for health policy & media engagement. Known as the “comic nurse,” czerwiec is a former nurse who now teaches graphic medicine and writes comics that tackle healthcare topics, including serious illness and death.
