Swahili Empire The swahili people originate from bantu inhabitants of the coast of southeast africa, in kenya, tanzania, and mozambique. these bantu speaking agriculturalists settled the coast at the outset of the first millennium. From the mid 8th century, muslim traders from arabia and egypt began to permanently settle in towns and trading centres along the swahili coast, especially on the safer coastal islands. in the 12th century settlers came from persia, known as shirazi people.

Swahili Empire The swahili people (or waswahili) are an ethnic and cultural group inhabiting east africa. members primarily reside on the swahili coast, in an area encompassing the zanzibar archipelago, littoral kenya, the tanzania seaboard, and northern mozambique. This coastal region, which today stretches along the eastern edge of africa from somalia in the north to mozambique in the south, is known as the swahili coast and is home to a unique culture and language—a multicultural polyglot of african, arab, and indian ocean peoples. Ironically, the story of swahili origins has been molded almost entirely by non swahili people, a challenge shared with many other marginalized and colonized peoples who are the modern. Working with a team of 42 colleagues, including 17 african scholars and multiple members of the swahili community, we’ve now published the first ancient dna sequences from peoples of the swahili civilization.

Unlike the egyptians and nubians, the swahili people did not build a single kingdom or empire to rule all the swahili people and coastal towns. these coastal towns or city states were independent from each other and they sometimes competed for control of trade. During this time, the ruling elites of the swahili city states begun to firmly integrate themselves within the wider islamic world and define their relationships between each other by creating an origin myth for the prominent swahili cities. With the development of commercial activities, the empire became the meeting point of different cultures and religions. the swahili learned islam and arab culture from arab merchants, which played an important role in promoting the economy and trade of the empire. Today, the swahili are often seen simply as a tribe in kenya, but this document aims to offer a renewed perspective on swahili history, culture, and potential.
