A Sustainable Livelihoods Framework For The 21st Century Landscapes A livelihood is considered sustainable when it can cope with and recover from stresses and shocks, maintain or the capabilities and assets, and provide sustainable livelihood opportunities for the next generation, all while not undermining the natural resource base. Since its introduction in the early 1990s, the sustainable livelihoods approach (sla) (dfid, 1999) – or the sustainable livelihoods framework (slf) (undp, 2017) – has become a mainstay of both academic and applied fieldwork, especially in rural areas of the global south.
Sustainable Livelihoods Framework Term In speaking to both historical critiques and more recent debates, we present a slf for the 21st century, foregrounding a structural, spatially disaggregated, dynamic and ecologically coherent. The sustainable livelihoods approach improves understanding of the livelihoods of the poor. it organizes the factors that constrain or enhance livelihood opportunities, and shows how they relate.
