Home Sustainable Defensible Space The initiative focuses on offering practical solutions to improve resilience, resource conservation, and the resistance of structures to wildfire loss within the santa monica mountains national recreation area (smmnra) by enhancing homeowner management of defensible space zones. This resource introduces sustainable defensible space (sds) as the area around the home extending 100 feet from the home itself. Defensible space, within a sustainability framework, denotes the strategic configuration of physical environments and associated social systems to mitigate risk and enhance adaptive capacity against disturbances—be they environmental, economic, or social. Our goal is to improve both resource conservation and wildfire resistance by providing easy to follow maintenance practices for use by homeowners in their defensible space zone.
