This chapter offers definitions for and the history of the study of fandom, describing the development of fan studies in psychology. many definitions of fandom have been offered, but recently four fan behaviors have been identified empirically: collecting, experience, knowledge, and viewing. Fan culture, or fandom, is a term which describes communities built around a shared enjoyment of an aspect of popular culture, such as books, movies, tv shows, bands, sports or sports teams, etc. fan cultures are examples of participatory cultures. Two decades ago, the study of star trek fans by henry jenkins (1992) and camille bacon smith (1992), and of soap opera fans by harrington and bielby (1995a), launched the first wave of fandom studies, the study of fans' interpretative communities. The journal aims to provide a platform for interdisciplinary and innovative research that explores the diverse cultural, methodological, and political dimensions of fandom and participatory cultures.
