Alliance Governance How Does It Work In Your Alliances Strategic alliances are taking on an increasingly important role in international business. this collection of articles by leading scholars addresses fundamental questions on the governance and contractual mechanisms underlying alliances. Based on a case study of two sequential alliances between the same firms, we develop a more integrative perspective on alliance governance, providing insights into the interactions between structural and relational aspects, both within and between transactions. First, our in depth empirical investigation shows the significance of a revised typology of alliance governance mechanisms and showcases that contractual governance is not necessarily formal and relational governance is not necessarily informal. Using data from a lab experiment on 1,009 alliances and 31,662 partners' choices, we explore whether and how alliances succeed in different competitive scenarios, contingent on the use of formal governance mechanisms (termination clauses) and the number of partners in the alliance. We show how consideration of these five parameters provides a deeper understanding of alliance governance and suggest how partner organizations can achieve differential levels of connectivity and steering for their collaborative ventures. Therefore, in an alliance the firm should evaluate both its formal and relational governance mechanisms so as to strike the right balance between these and contribute to more effective alliance governance and, consequently, performance.
