Smap Spacecraft Smap, or soil moisture active passive, is an earth satellite mission that measures and maps earth's soil moisture and freeze thaw state to better understand terrestrial water, carbon and energy cycles. The smap observatory includes a dedicated spacecraft and instrument suite in a near polar, sun synchronous orbit. the smap measurement system consists of a radiometer (passive) instrument and a synthetic aperture radar (active) instrument operating with multiple polarizations in the l band range.

Smap Spacecraft The smap (soil moisture active passive) is a nasa mission, which uses a combined radiometer and high resolution radar to measure surface soil moisture and freeze thaw state, providing for scientific advances and societal benefits. Launched in january 2015, the soil moisture active passive (smap) mission consists of an imaging radar satellite whose operations are led by the national aeronautical and space administration (nasa), with assistance from the canadian space agency (csa). Nasa's soil moisture active passive (smap) mission's purpose is to measure the amount of water in the top 5cm of soil everywhere on earth's surface every 2 to 3 days. smap orbits earth at 685 km (426 mi) above the surface and has a period of 98.5 minutes. The smap mission is managed by the goddard space flight center (gsfc) within nasa’s earth systematic mission (esm) program. the jet propulsion laboratory (jpl) built the spacecraft and is assigned responsibility for the overall success of the smap project.

This dataset contains expert labeled telemetry anomaly data from the soil moisture active passive (smap) satellite and the mars science laboratory (msl) rover, curiosity. Smap stands for soil moisture active passive. it is the name of the mission, a satellite observatory consisting of both an active radar and a passive radiometer sharing a common l band feed horn. — the soil moisture active passive (smap) mission will provide global measurements of soil moisture and its freeze thaw state from a 685‑km, near‑polar, sun‑synchronous orbit for a period of 3 years. The following table includes the official smap mission data currently available from nsidc daac.
