Small Jewish Communities The roundtable is a resource for scholars, researchers, archivists, and historians who focus on jewish life in small town america. the roundtable welcomes researchers with all levels of experience. Different estimates show the number of jews living in the world between 14.4 and 17.5 million about half in israel and more than half of the rest in the museum of the jewish people. In addition to the unique historical and social stories they have to tell, small jewish communities can help us understand what it is to be jewish in america today – and how to increase the chances that your children’s children will be jewish. In a number of cities with small jewish communities, huge crowds gathered to chant slogans, throw rocks, destroy jewish property, and sometimes even attack the local jews themselves.

The Small Jewish Communities Project In addition to the unique historical and social stories they have to tell, small jewish communities can help us understand what it is to be jewish in america today – and how to increase the chances that your children’s children will be jewish. In a number of cities with small jewish communities, huge crowds gathered to chant slogans, throw rocks, destroy jewish property, and sometimes even attack the local jews themselves. There are so many factors weighing on small jewish communities nowadays. some of these factors were already in existence before the pandemic, but many of them have cropped up or become more acute since the pandemic. Jews were among the earliest settlers in dallas. by the time of the civil war, a small number of jews owned stores along main street. some, like polish born alex simon, did not stay in town very long. simon owned a store in town by 1858, but moved to brenham in 1863. In all there are over 300 jewish communities in the us with under 5,000 individuals who self identify as jewish. the vast majority have jewish populations under 3,000 and over half under 1,000 jewish residents. We are grateful to have global jewry’s support as we focus on lifting up the needs of smaller jewish communities, in canada and elsewhere, and look forward to helping global jewry connect all of us more meaningfully to strengthen our people and communities.
