During formation of the primary body, many plants retain meristematic tissues among differentiated ones. when stimulated to divide, these meristems, called cambia, produce new cells that, together with the remaining primary tissues, form the secondary (woody) plant body. The thickening of the stem that occurs in secondary growth is due to the formation of secondary phloem and secondary xylem by the vascular cambium, plus the action of cork cambium, which forms the tough outermost layer of the stem. Secondary growth can be defined as a phenomenon where, after the completion of primary tissue formation, more secondary tissues are developed to supplement dermal, vascular and mechanical tissue system in certain plants.
