Sahel Programme
Building Resilience In The Sahel Programme Unicef West And Central Africa The unodc sahel programme has been developed within the framework of the united nations integrated strategy for the sahel (uniss), which the un secretary general launched in june 2013. Wfp’s resilience efforts in the sahel focus on sustainable land and natural resource management. initiatives include land rehabilitation to boost local food production, protect biodiversity and reduce vulnerability to climate shocks.
Sahel Programme In 2012, the world bank and the global environment facility launched the sahel and west africa program in support of the great green wall (sawap) to restore degraded land, support local economies, and strengthen resilience from senegal to ethiopia. The first phase of the building resilience in the sahel programme was implemented during 2019 2023, reaching more than 3.5 million vulnerable people (including 2.7 million children) achieving and maintaining development gains before, during and after shocks. Many people in the sahel are trapped in a downward spiral of land degradation and poverty, as natural resources dwindle, agricultural productivity declines, economic inequalities deepen, hunger increases, and vulnerability to disasters and conflict risks rises. Funded by sweden, this regional project aims to foster risk informed solutions for sustainable development in western sahel and lake chad basin countries: burkina faso, chad, mali, mauritania, niger, nigeria, and senegal.

Funded by sweden, this regional project aims to foster risk informed solutions for sustainable development in western sahel and lake chad basin countries: burkina faso, chad, mali, mauritania, niger, nigeria, and senegal. Rich in natural resources, cultural diversity, and human capital, the sahel holds vast potential for economic growth, innovation, and sustainable development despite significant challenges. The sahel integrated resilience programme (sahel irp), led by wfp and partners, is dedicated to restoring ecosystems and supporting vulnerable communities across burkina faso, chad, mali, mauritania, and niger. Funded by the german federal ministry for economic cooperation and development (bmz), the building resilience in the sahel (or "brs") multi sector, multi year programme (2023 2027) seeks to strengthen resilience of social systems, communities, and individuals to multiple shocks and stresses, directly benefiting over 14.2 million at risk people. Building on the results of the first generation of german funded resilience programmes, the german federal ministry for economic cooperation and development (bmz), wfp, unicef and giz aim to form a strategic alliance for resilience strengthening in the sahel.
