Safe Routes To School Program The Collaborative In order to encourage more students to walk and bike to school, the montgomery county department of transportation (mcdot) has created this story map to highlight the many resources and programs we have available for residents of the community. Our new safe routes to school toolkit offers a wide range of resources for integrating pedestrian and bicycle safety into the classroom, schoolwide efforts, and the broader community. Nctcog's safe routes to school (srts) program is focused on encouraging and enabling more children to safely walk and bicycle to school, thereby improving student health, traffic congestion, safety, and air quality around schools. This will not only allow schools to identify existing safe routes, but will assist in identifying deficiencies that need to be addressed as well as targeting specific routes and transportation networks that should be the focus of the school’s srts plan.
