Rooftop Home Retrouvius Design Studio The rooftop home of retrouvius founders, adam hills and maria speake, stands as a testament to what can be achieved with the creative use of salvaged materials. Photograph by michael sinclair. above: fashion designer bella freud, another contributor to the book, commissioned retrouvius to build her london hideaway. it’s arrayed around a central “courtyard” with a green carpet and features interior steel windows saved from the battersea power station. To create a glamorous home suited to the needs of small children and their parents, retrouvius opened out the space right from the front door. a wall was removed (no more dragging buggies up the corridor) and spaces designed for flexible use. The home in which we are about to enjoy maria’s salad is the family’s second in london. two rectangular pavilions face each other above ground, overlooking a courtyard in between. below ground, they are connected to a third space used for professional engagements and the occasional dinner party.
