Well, that period of transition is called the proto renaissance. it defines the years roughly from 1300 to 1400 ce, when artists such as giotto introduced new artistic techniques, and philosophers emerged with thoughts on humanism. Often credited with being the ‘father of renaissance’, giotto di bondone, was the first ever artist to break away from the monotonous byzantine style of paintings and move forward with naturalism. he spent his entire career focusing on frescos and drawing from real life. Giotto was a florentine by birth and primarily worked in tuscany, but his fame led him to undertake commissions across italy, including in padua, rome, naples, and assisi. An artist who played a decisive role in the development of italian painting in his century and beyond (his works were studied and copied by masters of the stature of masaccio and michelangelo), giotto was probably born in florence c. 1265.
