The Evolution Of Octavia Butler S Cover Art As i mentioned in the previous review, i didn’t know what happened after the end of the first book. the second fills in the holes of what happened with the daughter. Parable of the sower is the first book in earthseed duology, and the story begins in the year 2024; yes, not long from now. the story revolves around lauren olamina and her family, who live in one of the only safe neighborhoods remaining on the outskirts of los angeles. I've been wanting to read them for a while. octavia butler is considered to be the mother of her genre, and her works are widely considered to be the basis of many of the greats of scifi and political fiction. In this dystopian america, horrifying things happen and butler pulls no punches here, but the way it's told is never gritty for shock value not glossed over but not dwelt on in an exploitative way. simply it's what happens.

Butler is an amazing writer, but as a black woman, her work was somewhat marginalized in the sci fi world of the 70s and 80s. now, fourteen years after her death, her work is enjoying a well deserved renaissance with the admiration of feminists, african americans, and the science fiction community. Octavia e. butler's brilliant two volume earthseed saga offers a startling vision of an show more all too possible tomorrow, in which walls offer no protection from a civilization gone mad. In contrast to her younger brother, who made his way in the outside world on cruelty and guile, she gathers a group of travelers and ex slaves for mutual protection and support and from them forms her first earthseed commune. After reading both books in the earthseed series and having read 1984, i see it. there is so much more i’d love to say about these books, but they’d give too much away.
