Gilbert White Willamette Heritage Center In this room we've added a new display case full of items relating to gilbert white's family, which until now we've never been able to display before. we've added the portraits of gilbert's close family to walls many of whom had a big influence on gilbert's nature career. In 2020 gilbert white turned 300, we also embarked on a history makers project funded by aim biffa award, as part of the landfill communities fund, which we completed just in time for gilbert.

Revealing Gilbert White Gilbert Whites House Gilbert white (18 july 1720 – 26 june 1793) was a "parson naturalist", a pioneering english naturalist, ecologist, and ornithologist. he is best known for his natural history and antiquities of selborne. Discover why gilbert white was one of britain's most influential naturalists and how he inspired generations of artists and writers including eric ravilious. Gilbert white kept a single european tortoise at selborne from 1780 1793, when white died, and timothy is reputed to have died the following year. the shell was retained in the white family until given to the british museum in 1853. The project will refresh the interpretation of gilbert white in the museum & reach out through social media and nature recording activities to reveal the importance of gilbert white’s life & work to our current understanding of the natural world & climate change.

Rev. gilbert white lived mostly in the hampshire village of selborne from 1720 to 1793. also a keen gardener, he began to study nature by close observation – a process he called ‘watching narrowly’ – and wrote about what he discovered to his friends thomas pennant and daines barrington. Pennant recruited gilbert to provide information for his books, and when benjamin white printed for daines barrington (1727–1800) a set of weekly forms entitled the naturalist’s journal, it was probably pennant who suggested to barrington that he send a set to gilbert.
