They are proven tools for safer streets and are essential to every city’s bike network. protected bike lanes are separated from general purpose travel lanes with both a buffer and a vertical element, such as a median, curb, or flexible delineators. Traffic patterns have changed in the cultural district with the installation of protected bike lanes. penn avenue is now one way to vehicular traffic westbound from 16th street to 6th street. a two way bike lane now occupies the eastbound side of the street. Volunteers paint a temporary parking protected bike lane along the former penn circle. since 2019, we’ve been working with the bicycle coalition of greater philadelphia to legalize the use of parking protected bike lanes on state owned or funded roads. Since our last bike map was released 2 years ago, the city of pittsburgh now has over 117 miles of marked bike routes from contraflow and protected bike lanes, 2 stage turn boxes, and neighborways to make navigating our city by bike easier, safer, and more enjoyable!. Starting and ending at frick environmental center, this 15 mile marshaled loop will roll past key infrastructure wins. after the ride, roll back over to frick environmental center for hot dogs (vegan option, too!), hangs, and good company to celebrate the progress we’ve made over the past 20 years of connecting the bike network.
