Promoting Interoperability Masshiway Since 2011, implementation of the meaningful use (mu) standards has been promoted through the medicare and medicaid ehr incentive programs. by participating in the programs, eligible healthcare providers have been able to earn incentives based on meeting mu requirements. A guide to help clinicians get started participating in the promoting interoperability performance category of the merit based incentive payment system (mips) during the 2025 performance year.

The goal of data interoperability is to improve electronic reporting to public health and ultimately improve patient care. cms requires eligible hospitals, cahs, and clinicians to adopt, implement, and upgrade various applications of certified ehr technologies. In 2015, the medicare access and chip reauthorization act (macra) sunset the medicare ehr incentive program for eligible professionals and incorporated similar requirements into mips as one of the four performance categories, which includes the promoting interoperability performance category. Purpose: this resource focuses on the promoting interoperability performance category, providing high level requirements about data collection and submission for the 2024 performance year for individual, group, virtual group, subgroups, and alternative payment model (apm) entity participation.

The massachusetts department of public health works with eligible professionals and hospitals to help them meet public health objectives to qualify for these incentives. cms renamed the electronic health records (ehrs) incentive programs as the promoting interoperability (pi) programs in april 2018. To enable utilization of event notification services (ens) across massachusetts, eohhs and the mass hiway have developed the statewide ens framework to create an interoperable ens network that serves all care providers in the commonwealth. to learn more about the framework, click here.
