Echo links expert specialist teams at an academic ‘hub’ with primary care providers in local communities – the ‘spokes’ of the model. together, they participate in teleechotm clinics, which are like virtual clinical rounds, combining patient case presentations with didactic learning and mentoring. The traditional echo session protocol includes introductions of the spokes (prioritizing video callers to reinforce community building behaviors), introductions of the hub panelists, announcements from spokes and or hub, a live didactic or role play, and a case consultation. The submission of cases for presentation and discussion or consultation is a key component in the project echo model and critically important for knowledge building and sharing. Published data demonstrate that patients who received care from providers mentored using the echo methodology had outcomes as good or better than those treated at specialized referral hospitals, which has largely been credited to leveraging the patient‐centered medical home model.
