In this review, we provide an overview of the process of problem based learning (pbl) and the studies examining the effectiveness of pbl. we also discuss a number of naturalistic and empirical studies that have examined the process of pbl and how its various components impact students’ learning. It harnesses small group work to engage students in self directed learning, based around a case, which students generate their own learning goals (‘issues’) from. the teacher acts as a facilitator, scaffolding the learning process. In pbl activities, students use ‘triggers’ derived from the problem or case to define their own learning outcomes objectives. triggers can be a photograph, a journal article, a newspaper clipping, statistics, or graphs. Rather than teaching relevant material and subsequently having students apply the knowledge to solve problems, the problem is presented first. pbl assignments can be short, or they can be more involved and take a whole semester. Problem based learning (pbl) is a powerful teaching method that equips students with the skills they need to succeed in the real world. by actively engaging with real world problems, students develop critical thinking, problem solving, collaboration, and communication skills.
