Planetary Geoscience Research Areas Research Department Of Earth And Our research on processes that govern the planet earth inform our understanding of other planets in our solar system and across the universe. we study the deep structures of the planet, the processes that shape its surface, and the composition and dynamics of its atmosphere. We study the processes that shape our planet, from the building of mountains and oil bearing sedimentary basins, to the flow of warm rocks and cold glaciers, to the triggering of earthquakes.
Planetary Geoscience The Department Of Geosciences Our research examines everything from the earth’s deepest interior, to the dynamic atmosphere and oceans, and beyond our solar system. climate change poses societal challenges and compelling scientific problems. we observe, analyze, and model the components of climate from local to global scales. Research in the department encompasses all parts of the earth’s dynamic system—from the core to the surface to the atmosphere—and the systems of other planetary bodies. We investigate the physics and chemistry of earth and planetary materials, and examine how human activities intersect with geological processes and resources. explore our diverse, interdisciplinary research areas—where curiosity drives discovery and science informs a more sustainable future. It combines chemistry, physics, biology, mathematics, and geology to study the earth’s interior, atmosphere, oceans, environment, causes of global climate change, and the history of life and climate on our planet.

It combines chemistry, physics, biology, mathematics, and geology to study the earth’s interior, atmosphere, oceans, environment, causes of global climate change, and the history of life and climate on our planet. Our central research questions are worked on by research groups that are assigned to one of the three institutes in the department. due to the interdisciplinary nature of the research fields in the area of earth sciences, several cross departmental projects have been established. These projects include substantial amounts of field, lab, and computational work. many of the research projects are collaborative both within and outside the department, with notable ties to earthscope, the field museum, and the chicago botanic garden, to name just a few. Delving into questions about the processes that influence the natural world and sustain life on earth, our students and faculty cross boundaries between disciplines, fostering research collaborations unmatched by any other program. Our faculty’s research areas cover the earth and beyond: atmosphere, oceans, and climate; geochemistry; geology and geophysics; global change science; ecology and paleoecology; and planets.
