Pine River Fish Passage This project will help increase the numbers of these species and other aquatic species as passage and connectivity is restored between big pine lake, the pine river, tributaries, and ultimately the mississippi. this will greatly benefit migratory fish, mussels, and numerous aquatic organisms. The occasion was momentous in that it solved two problems, replacing a failing 50 year old dam built to maintain big pine lake water levels and reconnecting downstream fish to upstream habitats.

Pine River Fish Passage Technical service area (tsa) 8 staf engineered and coordinated the pine river rock dam replacement project, which restores fish passage, and enhances habitat for fish and other aquatic species in the pine river and connected waters including the mississippi river. A $1.2 million grant that was awarded by the outdoor heritage council will now fund the pine river fish passage in crow wing county. the minnesota pollution control agency will also track the success of the project on a 10 year cycle. The construction began in january 2020. the contractor installed sheet piling and box culverts to diverge the water so they could remove the old dam and start to work on the rock weir structures. as designed, the contractor installed five weirs across the pine river. In 2022, the dam was removed and replaced with a rock arch rapids by the city of pine river. replacing the high hazard dam with a rock riffle enhanced fish passage, biological connectivity, habitat, safety, aesthetics, fishing, and recreational access to the river. This minnesota department of natural resources map shows all the locations where dams were removed and replaced with rock rapids to reconnect water bodies and improve fish passage.
