Pine River Fish Passage

Pine River Fish Passage This project will help increase the numbers of these species and other aquatic species as passage and connectivity is restored between big pine lake, the pine river, tributaries, and ultimately the mississippi. this will greatly benefit migratory fish, mussels, and numerous aquatic organisms. Nearby home owners experienced flooding and in turn keeping big pine lake at a lower water level. mnl executed a highly intricate plan including series of rock weirs to control the stream both up and downstream while allowing migrating fish to pass easily.

Pine River Fish Passage The occasion was momentous in that it solved two problems, replacing a failing 50 year old dam built to maintain big pine lake water levels and reconnecting downstream fish to upstream habitats. Technical service area (tsa) 8 staf engineered and coordinated the pine river rock dam replacement project, which restores fish passage, and enhances habitat for fish and other aquatic species in the pine river and connected waters including the mississippi river. The main purpose of the project is to rebuild ecological health of fish and other aquatic life reliant on the pine, feeder streams, wetlands, and lakes. the riffles are engineered to restore natural flows, spawning habitat, and in stream cycling. The crow wing soil and water conservation district releases start to finish video footage of the pine river fish passage project. this video gives you the inside view of what it took to replace the pine rock dam into a five rock weir structure.

The city of crosslake took responsibility for reconstruction of big pine trail, if necessary, which reduced contractor costs by over $300,000 as compared to the original phase 2 bids. in the end, the project took nearly five years to complete from start to finish. Low flow and fish passage are maintained with a 21 foot wide minimum, 1 foot deep spillway along the centerline of the pine river. the rock riffle structure was designed to maintain big pine lake pool elevation between elevations and flow rates. In 2022, the dam was removed and replaced with a rock arch rapids by the city of pine river. replacing the high hazard dam with a rock riffle enhanced fish passage, biological connectivity, habitat, safety, aesthetics, fishing, and recreational access to the river. The pine river fish passage project mission was to repair the rock dam and restore fish passage, but there is more to it than just that. “it extends to the land,” said lead project manager beth hippert.
