Patedu Statins
Patedu Statins For some people, good heart health may depend on the use of statins. statins are medications that can lower blood cholesterol levels. lower cholesterol is a key factor in good heart health. A growing number of studies have shown that statins reduce cardiovascular risk and improve symptoms associated with pad. current guidelines recommend the use of statins in all patients with pad in order to decrease cardiovascular events and mortality.
Patedu Statins Although statins are currently recommended for use in patients with pad, most of the evidence supporting current guidelines is extrapolated from cardiac literature. in this evidence based summary, we review the evidence for the use of statins in patients with pad. Are statins safe? statins are generally safe when used at recommended dosages. serious muscle effects have been reported with statins, including rhabdomyolysis – this is the destruction of muscle cells. The aim was to identify the effect of statin therapy (standard therapy vs. no therapy) and intensity of statin dose (high dose therapy vs. combined low and moderate dose therapy) in patients with pad with regards to the effect on mortality, cardiovascular and limb specific outcomes.

Combination therapy with low density lipoprotein cholesterol (ldl c)–lowering therapies with proven outcome benefit is increasingly needed for patients with peripheral artery disease (pad) to achieve lower ldl c levels that meet current guideline recommendations. Dr. johnston’s answer is clear: “if you have a diagnosis of pad or coronary disease, you are on it because it is guideline medical therapy to lower your ldl c by 50%, no matter what that starting value is.”. Statin use was lower in patients with pad only (33.9%) versus those with cerebrovascular disease only (43.0%) or chd only (51.7%). despite having high risk for ascvd events, patients with pad were less likely to be taking a statin versus those with chd or cerebrovascular disease. Given the prevalence and morbidity of pad, there is a clear need for therapies that improve pad specific outcomes, such as amputation, and reduce the risk of other major cardiovascular events that are common among patients with atherosclerosis, as well.
