Patchwork Challenge July 2016 Birdguides Monday, 11 july 2016 quiet homecoming after three weeks plus in france i returned home to a much changed patch. no birdsong, everything keeping out of sight, rampant greenery and very few additions to the patch lists. nevertheless in the words of edith piaf " non, je ne regrette rien". But what is patchwork challenge and why do we need your details? patchwork challenge (pwc) has been running since 2013 and is a friendly, community orientated competition to help link patch birders and encourage birding your local area whilst providing support and context for this. Anyone doing this? i've been inspired by a fellow blogger and it sounds quite fun. i'm trying to decide on my patch. i like the idea of long ham lakes and parts of hengistbury head, but am u sure if you can have two separate patches. also, i'm unsure how to plan out my patch in terms of kilometers. Patchwork challenge was set up encourage birders to look for birds rather than look at pagers. each participant has a ‘patch’ of no more than 3sqk which they go bird on as often as they can. the emphasis is on recording and finding your own local birds and understanding your site better.

We would also like to mention two great supporters and stalwarts of patchwork challenge who sadly left us this year: martin garner and pete antrobus. both were very well known and popular in birding circles and contributed a great deal to the challenge. Patchwork challenge is a birding competition with the aim of getting people to record birds on their ‘patch’. a patch can be no more than 3km2 – mine incorporates a small part of hunmanby (my garden and the water treatment works), the road down to hunmanby gap and the gap itself. Saturday, 12 november 2016 visitor from iceland this week at wow we had a lot of interesting events, not all bird related. first the heavy rain showers gave some spectacular rainbows. then we watched a ship head off down the lagan loaded up with wind turbines from the site next door. We then process it and scores start coming out a few days later as we write articles.we normally have a monthly best find round up on the blog and a magazine article on birdguides which both come out in the third week of the month.
