Our Common Energy Future
Our Energy Future Medium In theory, all the various energy sources can contribute to the future energy mix worldwide. but each has its own economic, health, and environmental costs, benefits, and risks factors that interact strongly with other governmental and global priorities. The publication of our common future and the work of the world commission on environment and development laid the groundwork for the convening of the 1992 earth summit and the adoption of agenda 21 and the rio declaration, and led to the establishment of the commission on sustainable development.
Empowering Progress Overcoming Common Energy Efficiency Challenges Together, we should span the globe, and pull together to formulate an interdisciplinary, integrated approach to global concerns and our common future. we needed broad participation and a clear majority of members from developing countries, to reflect world realities. One way to consider the future of energy and climate is through annual long term energy outlooks that articulate different trajectories based on varying assumptions about future policies, technologies, costs, and other factors. Our common future stated that governments could not address environmental protection separately from related crises, such as economic development and energy production. our common future also outlined a blueprint for dealing with these interlocking crises simultaneously. In this report, we outline four distinct scenarios, each exploring a different pathway for the energy transition and its potential impact. the path forward will require flexibility, innovation, and a pragmatic balance between economic and environmental priorities.

The genesis of our common future lies in a growing global unease during the early 1980s, a period marked by escalating environmental degradation and persistent social inequalities. The energy landscape reflects over a decade of gradual shifts. today’s energy system is the result of years of evolving priorities, disruptions and transformation – but 2025 marks a critical inflection point. the ambition delivery gap emerged early. Most of the studies selected showed that leed certified buildings registered energy efficiency benefits. however, a few articles challenged these findings, citing that some leed certified buildings did not show improvement in energy efficiency compared to non leed certified buildings. "our common future" identifies the management of global commons like antarctica and outer space as an issue requiring urgent attention. it highlights the risk of the "tragedy of the commons," where shared resources are overused and depleted.
