One Step Forward One Step Sideways Three Steps Forward A Book Review
One Step Sideways Three Steps Forward Princeton University Press One is how and why species multiply: the radiation of darwin’s finches. rosemary and peter grant are best known for their meticulous work tracking the evolution and speciation of finch populations in the galápagos. It was a great pleasure in 2023 to come full circle, so to speak, when i had the honour of reviewing peter grant's autobiography enchanted by daphne, a fine book and one that permitted me to get to know this great scientist a little better.
One Step Sideways Three Steps Forward Princeton University Press How does a woman born in 1936 become an evolutionary biologist and nurture a marriage and a family without losing her mind?. This section of the book emphasizes both the importance of a global perspective in addressing problems of conservation, as well as the interconnectedness of science. i was especially excited to review this book because of the parallels between my and grant’s personal professional balancing acts. The story of the unorthodox and inspiring life and career of a pioneering biologist scientist rosemary grant’s journey in life has involved detours and sidesteps—not the shortest or the straightest of paths, but one that has led her to the top of evolutionary biology. At a time when 3.4% of school graduates went to university, most of them men, she knew she had a hard road ahead to achieve her dream. her father, who had suggested she apply “to the domestic science school,” came around to agree to pay her tuition for a year, and longer if she did well.

Grant (research scholar emerita, princeton univ.; 40 years of evolution) recounts her amazing accomplishments with humility and humor in this delightful memoir. growing up in england’s lakes district, grant was surrounded by wildlife. This adorable 3 month old puppy may be small in size, weighing in at approximately 4.5 pounds, but she makes up for it with her endless energy and loving personality. despite her tiny stature, even smaller than the resident cats in her foster home, coco approaches life with curiosity and enthusiasm. Their work has profoundly altered our understanding of how a group of eighteen species has diversified from a single ancestral species, demonstrating that evolution by natural selection can be observed and interpreted in an entirely natural environment.
