Northwest Vancouver Island Tsunami Risk Assessment And Story Map The knowledge shared through interviews not only illuminated the immense history of earthquakes and tsunamis on the northwest coast of vancouver island, but also gave insight to the hazard mapping component of this risk assessment. The northwest vancouver island tsunami risk project is a collaborative approach to tsunami risk assessments and modelling with five first nations, four municipalities, and two regional districts. Several overwater hazard graphics (figure 3) and inundation maps (figure 4) were created to represent the tsunami hazard information in each study area, including the tsunami wave amplitudes, current velocities, tsunami arrival times, and extent of flooding. The strathcona regional district has created the northwest vancouver island tsunami story map, which compiles information collected during risk assessments done by local governments and first nations.
Northwest Vancouver Island Tsunami Risk Assessment And Story Map Several overwater hazard graphics (figure 3) and inundation maps (figure 4) were created to represent the tsunami hazard information in each study area, including the tsunami wave amplitudes, current velocities, tsunami arrival times, and extent of flooding. The strathcona regional district has created the northwest vancouver island tsunami story map, which compiles information collected during risk assessments done by local governments and first nations. The story map demonstrates findings from the tsunami risk assessment through maps, figures, photos, and video while reflecting on stories about similar events which have been passed down through oral tradition within the indigenous population. The goal of this project is to understand tsunami risks on the northwest coast of vancouver island, by using tsunami mapping and drawing upon community experience and indigenous knowledge. As part of the northwest vancouver island tsunami risk assessment project, the map compiles data from ocean networks canada, northwest hydraulic consultants, strathcona regional district, local governments and first nations living in the study area. Our goal is to better understand tsunami risks on the northwest coast of vancouver island through tsunami models and the completion of a risk assessment with the integration of community experience and indigenous knowledge.
