Historic Pavement Stock Image Colourbox Our most democratic form of built heritage, historic street pavement has been largely ignored by the preservation movement. before the 1920s, cities experimented with an amazing variety of paving materials that were essential to modernizing urban life. America's roads face a crisis due to underinvestment, costing drivers $1,400 annually. we can no longer afford to simply patch and repair; we must build for the future. building 100 year pavement foundations is not only a technical challenge; it's a strategic imperative.

Historic Pavement The focus of this review has been on those pavement types which led to asphalt pavement design. it should be noted that portland cement concrete (pcc), up until 1909, was largely used as a base or “foundation” layer for surface course materials such as bricks, wood blocks, sheet asphalt, etc. The discussion categorizes paving design and technology innovations into two high level sections: 1) high volume urban pavement innovations and 2) low volume rural pavement innovations. In the late 1800s, american roads were nearly impassable—muddy in the winter and dusty in the summer. but in 1891, chemist george bartholomew had a bold vision: what if concrete, a material few considered for road construction, could transform the way america traveled?.
