New 1991 2020 Climate Normals
1991 2020 Climate Normals The u.s. climate normals quick access tool provides graphs and tables of average temperature, precipitation, and snowfall at more than 15,000 u.s. observation stations. After much anticipation, the national oceanic and atmospheric administration (noaa) along with the national centers for environmental information (ncei) have released the new u.s. climate normals for 1991 2020.
1991 2020 Climate Normals Climate normals are calculated using the best available data, which means removing missing or questionable data points. climate normals are updated every ten years: the currently used normals are from 1991 2020. Climatological standard normals: averages of climatological data computed for the following consecutive periods of 30 years: 1 january 1981 to 31 december 2010, 1 january 1991 to 31 december 2020, etc. (technical regulations). 30 year normals are shared in our daily and monthly climate summaries for stations across the us. commonly used in local tv weather broadcasts, newspapers, and other media venues. the use of 30 year normals allows us to provide context for weather and extreme events on daily to annual time scales. What do the new normals say? warming from 1981 2010 to 1991 2020 is widespread, but not found everywhere across the continental u.s., either in geographic space or time of year, with recent cooling in the north central u.s.

In early may 2021, the 30 year period covered by the official u.s. climate normals shifted from 1981 2010 to 1991 2020. because they are updated once per decade, the normals gradually come to reflect the "new normal" of climate change caused by global warming. In producing the newest set of climate normals, the years of 1981 1990 were replaced with the years 2011 2020 before passing through ncei data quality checks. individual stations can then be gridded into a mean monthly map. The 1991–2020 u.s. climate normals are the latest in a series of decadal normals first produced in the 1950s. they were first released in may 2021 (v1.0.0), and the statistics for 23 of the sites were reissued in 2023 (v1.0.1). In may of 2021, noaa's national centers for environmental information (ncei) released an update to the u.s. climate normals. this update replaces the 1981 2010 normals with 1991 2020 normals.
