Metop Sg A Instruments
Metop Sg Instruments Eumetsat Ten state of the art instruments will improve weather forecasts and extend climate records. from measuring temperature and water vapour, to imaging fine particles, to detecting wind across the sea surface, the instruments on board metop second generation satellites will collect crucial data. It combines the two original metop’s advanced microwave sounding unit a (amsu a1 and amsu a2) and microwave humidity sound (mhs) into a single antenna instrument with new channels for temperature, humidity sounding and ice cloud detection.
Metop Sg Instruments Eumetsat Metop sg a1 carries advanced instruments—including optical, infrared, microwave imaging, aerosol and trace gas monitoring, and radio occultation—for climate and weather observation, and also hosts the copernicus sentinel 5 payload supporting air quality and greenhouse gas tracking. Metop sga satellites will host atmospheric sounding and imaging instruments that will provide optical, infrared, and microwave observations. the payload will provide critical atmospheric data on cloud, temperature, aerosols, and moisture, as well as a multitude of other critical measurements. Metop sg satellites are being built in two series: a, carrying visible, infrared, and microwave imagers and sounders; and b, carrying microwave imagers and radars. The satellite a series focuses on optical instruments and atmospheric sounders, while the satellite b series focuses on microwave instruments. both types will be based on airbus defense and space’s astrobus high power satellite platforms.

Eumetsat successfully launched the first satellite of the eumetsat polar system second generation (eps sg), developed as a collaborative program between eumetsat and esa, on 13 august 2025 at 0037:50 (utc) on an ariane 62 launcher. eps sg is europe's contribution to the noaa eumetsat joint polar system, continuing and expanding midmorning orbit observations provided by the metop satellites. The package totals ten different instruments across both satellites, some of which are based on the sound heritage of the first metop series, and some of which are completely new. In this work, a new tomographic reconstruction method has been developed to describe the plasmasphere using metop (meteorological operational) data. Unlike the original metop series of three successive single satellites, the all new metop sg mission comprises three successive pairs of satellites. each metop sg pair is made up of an a type and a b type satellite that carry a different, but complementary, suite of remarkable instruments.
